I wasn't able to try out Oscar's Gastropub at 1738 E Boston as my friends had during Restaurant Week but finally got to go this past Friday. They had raved about their lunch non-stop and I was pretty jealous of what they were describing. Afterall, when they say they have found the best sweet potato fries in town, I know this is a place worth checking out. And I was not disappointed! They are in the building that used to be home to Steamroller Blues (man, do I miss their burgers and cheesefries, sigh..). They have really done a lot to make the place seem much brighter and open with a nice muted green paint, polished table tops and aluminum chairs. And the service was really fantastic. Very friendly and attentive but without being overly so. We didn't want for anything and got great info on the dinner menu.
We went for lunch and I had the Buffalo Chicken sliders with bleu cheese dressing and crispy onion strings. It was great! The spicy and tangy buffalo sauce was wonderful and was cooled down by the thin layer of bleu cheese. The thinly sliced, crispy onions were a nice complement in flavor and texture and came on soft but chewy ciabatta rolls. It was a real winner in my book. With all the sandwiches you get a wonderful treat in a fried pickle spear. Fried pickles are one of my favorites and this was nice crunchy and flavorful version. It was heavily breaded and formed a nice herby crust and was perfect when dipped in their version of ranch dressing. And then there were the sweet potato fries. Now, I have to admit I am not quite as in love with them as my friends are because I have a real love for the ones at McNellie's and so it is pretty hard to change my mind. But, these were pretty darn good. They are crinkle cut here and have even more sweet potato-iness to them than most I have had. They were also great in their ranch style dressing. If you are a fan of the sweet potato fry then you definitely need to check these out. I also hear that the Grilled Cheese sandwich with pesto on texas toast is to die for. I will be giving it a go on the next trip.
The dinner menu also has some eye-catchers that make me want to come back in the evening soon. They have a pork t-bone, hanger steak and frites, and grilled teriyaki salmon that all look wonderful, but the waitress says you have to come back for the kobe beef meatloaf. She says it is so good you have to lie to your mamma about who has the best meatloaf. She promises it will melt in your mouth and has just an incredible flavor. Sounds good to me!
And the bar at Oscar's is really great. They have 24 beers on tap and a wide array of others in bottles and wines. We are already planning a happy hour in the near future to check it out. I would certainly recommend Oscar's for a great lunch and that you give them a try for dinner. I know I will be back!
